Life Happens – the Good and the Bad

Isn’t it funny how life happens? Maybe not funny – but it always ‘happens’ when you can’t really afford it. Sometimes quite literally – when you can’t afford it. Read on.

Life is Good

The last three weeks have been an absolute whirlwind for my fiancé and I. Life in general has been great. Our jobs are going well, knocking wedding planning out, I finished another Whole 30; the list goes on. The lease for the apartment is up at the end of November so we started looking at houses. I figured it would be better to do it now than in November when we have to get out of the apartment. Plus that’s just too close to the wedding!

So we found one and placed an offer the next day. It was accepted almost right away! Exciting right?! So then we changed our minds’. Naturally. We took a couple of weeks off from searching and then placed an offer on our dream starter home. We decided there was just no way we’d get it, we were just too in love with it! And then they accepted our offer! We close at the beginning of the month! This time, we’re absolutely ecstatic. So planning a wedding on top of buying a house and moving (again), no big deal! Ha….

Then Life Happens

Over the weekend we had a car break down. Break down for good. Now we’re planning a wedding, buying a house & moving, AND buying a new car. Not only are we buying a new car, but the old car isn’t worth much at this point so a trade in probably won’t happen. Life happens, right?

Then this week at work has been crazy, to say the least. Yesterday I thought my head was actually going to explode. Truly. I really wasn’t sure I was going to make it. A small breakdown occurred right there at my desk in front of coworkers and families passing by. Life happens, I guess.

Something clicked. In response, I made myself the priority, rather than all the stuff going on around me. I came home an hour early. I totally unwound and just had some me time. Who knew how badly I needed that? This morning I made it back to a Pure Barre class. It absolutely kicked my seat. I made my favorite green tea latte with the best matcha, got to work early, and knocked out the day, one thing at a time.

The Big Idea

The point of this post isn’t to complain and especially not for any kind of sympathy. Yeah, life happens. Good parts of life and sucky parts of life. Sometimes the good comes all at once and sometimes the sucky comes all at once. How are you going to react to life happening? Are you going to let it knock you down?

My mini breakdown at my desk could have certainly knocked me down. Instead, I finally recognized exactly what I needed. I needed to refocus on myself. What did my mind and body really need? A break. Release your mind from all the stress building up around you. Life happens, but life has everything to do with how you react to it.

Take deep breaths. Yell at your TV because the guide isn’t working on your cable box. Go for a run. . Make your favorite dish for dinner. Clean the house. Organize for the weeks and month ahead (I get myself together with my Day Designer!) Start packing for your move. Just take your mind off of the things contributing so heavily to your stress. Put your phone away and turn off the TV. Remove yourself from all the stuff, reset, and start the next day with a fresh slate.

Your Turn!

Who else has nearly lost their mind because life just kept happening? How did you cope and what did it take for you to recognize what you really needed?

  1. Life happens is so true! During the heat wave we had here our AC went out and the first fix didn’t fix it so we were without for a week. It wasn’t fun and it definitely was not something that we had in our budget but we made it work and now our house is back to being cool!
